OK, I'll take a look at this, after I've brought 0.98.6 up. The clue is
probably in console.c, where most of the selection patches reside. If I
find the problem, I'll re-release selection with patches against
0.98.6; it's probably about time...

have a very strange problem with my 8900C vga card and
xfree 1.0Ya. Most of the (many) timings that I have gleaned
from modegen, ftp sites, and news postings work BUT...
The screen appears as if somene has sliced the image into
vertical bands of ~10 pixels wide and has locally, say in groups of
3-4 bands, shuffled the order of the bands. The results is that an
arrow cxursor that should look like <=== comes out looking something like
<= == or = <== or =<< = depending on where it is on the screen
(sort of; its hard to show in text mode).
Another way of describing it is to say that it looks as if the screen
is made of 3 planes which are out of sync with each other.
This makes the text unreadable, but the xterms, xclock, twm menu etc
are all there, easily recognisable and all working.
startx >& errlog shows xfree 1.0Ya, recognises tvga8900
and has no complaints. The fact that it is like this for a variety
of resolutions and timings suggests to me that there may be some
thing other than timing values that is the problem.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I have an AMD-40 386 (no co-processor) and tvga card with 512K.
Everything is fine according to the tvgalib tests and with windoze.

The solution that worked for me was to uncompress all the fonts in misc, run
mkfontdir in that dir AGAIN :-) and then to edit Xconfig and remove the Font
directroy statement.
I then copied th Xconfig file into my home (non-root) directory fixed up the
access rights and then re-logged in. This (for me anyway) seemed to work. I
used the SLS package and then just replaced X with the S3 server.
Hope this helps

well, all of a sudden i now get "Broken pipe" when i run shutdown
or reboot, or halt, etc. it USED to work?
has anyone experienced this? what has happened? i have to shut down
my system now (which isn't very graceful, i know) by:
sync
(wait....)
ctrl-alt-del
does anyone have the source for shutdown? i'd certainly be interested
in looking at it for this reason, and also the 'garbage' message reason...

The latest version on libc.so.4.2 (on tsx-11 in pub/linux/GCC) fixes both
problems. I had the same trouble with an earlier libc.so.4.2, but the
newest fixes gs and tcsh. Give it a try.

Please email me the name of your card and your Xconfig settings if you like

Can someone supply me with the specs on the ATI Ultra Pro card?
winmarks and xstones would also be nice if you have them.
What options come with the card? I heard it works with an existing
vga/svga card. What the use for that?
Does it come with 1mb or 2mb? expandable?
24 bit? 16.7 mil colors? res ? what's the chipset?
I was told S3, if so which one? 911, 801, 805?
What's the current market price for it?
I currently run a diamond speedstar 24x in a 486dx50 eisa system.
I have a viewsonic 7 and run a few different OSs:
Linux & X386 (xwindows)
OS/2 2.0
Dos & Windows
Is it compatible with all three?
Would it work with the Speedstar 24X or instead of it? Is it faster then the
24X?
Anything else I should before investing ?

Speedstar use a PPL clock generator, they don't have fixed frequencies.
As far as I know such cards are not directly supported. Stuff to set the PLL
is available from me. Because many programmers dislike Diamond because of there NDA
policy no one will support the Diamond card. At home I havn't enough space to recompile the
X server to support the Speedstar card.

Subject: Clue to why 0.98.6 won't boot
Date: 8 Dec 1992 04:51:13 -0600
I've been trying to track down why 0.98.6 doesn't boot
for me. Unfortunately, I have some exams this week
and I can't complete the investigation for a while, but
I thought I'd announce what I've found.
Booting hangs right before the partition table gets
printed to the screen. So, i tracked down that, and
added a printk() in the top of sys_setup() in
kernel/blk_drv/genhd.c, just after the callable = 0;
statement. Well, this printk() gets displayed on the
screen, and then nothing else happens. it never
shows the partition table and never says the partition
table is okay.
I've tried the old genhd.c (from pl5) as a wild attempt,
but it didn't fix it.
If someone has the time, track it down please. I'd hate
to have a 0.99 come out that doesn't even boot on some
machines.
Also, can anyone tell me where sys_setup() is being called
from? it gets shoved into an array, and I think it's
being called from some ASM code somewhere, but I'm not
sure yet. Really whacked out.
More info later, if I force myself to study during kernel
compiles.. (smile)
